Zip Screens

Vertical screens that zip tight into aluminium side channels, turning an exposed deck or patio into a room you can actually sit in when the south-easter is up.

01

The zip difference

An ordinary drop screen flaps and works its way out of its guides the moment real wind arrives. A zip screen's fabric edge is welded into a zipper that runs captive inside aluminium side channels — no flapping, no gaps, genuine wind resistance. On a coast where the wind is the rule rather than the exception, that difference is the whole product.

02

Sunscreen mesh or clear PVC

Sunscreen mesh keeps the dune and ocean view while cutting glare, UV and the worst of the wind, with daytime privacy from outside looking in. Clear PVC panels close a patio into a genuine winter room — wind-and-rain-proof, view intact, for the months a mesh screen alone won't cut it.

03

Sizing and control

Spans run wide — 4m and beyond per screen on a single motor — with channels colour-matched to the structure. Motorisation is the practical standard on anything but a narrow single screen, and a wind sensor on the motor is worth the small extra cost anywhere the screen faces open dune or reserve land directly.

  • Sunscreen mesh or clear PVC, channels colour-matched to your structure
  • Motorised with wind-sensor retract recommended on exposed positions

One honest limit

A zip screen encloses and shades — it is not a structural wall replacement, and very long unsupported spans need an intermediate post or a linked multi-screen setup, which the in-home measure will size correctly.

Where we fit zip screens

From Melkbosstrand's dune-facing decks to Big Bay's kitesurf-adjacent balconies, zip screens are the answer wherever a patio is otherwise too windy to use.

What it costs

What closing in a stoep costs

A zip screen holds its mesh under tension in side channels, which is more hardware than an open outdoor blind and is exactly why it copes where an awning arm will not. The guide per square metre installed is R2,800 to R4,500 crank-operated and R4,000 to R6,000 motorised.

Where a job sits inside that band depends on the weave you pick, the channel system and whether you are closing a single opening or turning a corner with it. Narrow screens carry a minimum charge. The band is a planning figure; the written per-opening price comes out of the free measure, once the stoep and its exposure have been seen.
