Folding-Arm Awnings

Retractable shade over the deck or braai area, gone the instant the south-easter picks up — every awning we fit on this coast carries a wind sensor as standard, not an upsell.

01

Why a fixed roof doesn't win here

A folding-arm awning does what a fixed patio roof can't: it gives you shade on a hot afternoon and gets out of the way on a mild winter morning, with no posts breaking the dune view. Projection runs to roughly 3-4m over wide decks, and solution-dyed acrylic fabric holds its colour under the coast's UV load.

02

The wind sensor is not optional here

Melkbosstrand sits on the same stretch of coast that makes the beach immediately south a world kitesurfing destination — the Cape Doctor blows a consistent 15-25 knots from October to March. An awning left open in a rising gust doesn't survive it. Every motorised awning we fit here carries a wind sensor as standard: it winds the fabric in automatically before the gust arrives, whether or not anyone's home to notice.

03

Cassette and mounting choice

A full cassette — fabric and arms sealed away when retracted — is the right call for any exposed, weather-facing wall on this coast. Semi-cassette or open mounting can work on a more sheltered elevation. Crank handle or motorised operation; LED lighting and a vertical drop-valance are available on premium lines.

  • Wind sensor and motorised auto-retract standard on every install here
  • Full-cassette housing recommended for any exposed or dune-facing wall
  • Solution-dyed acrylic fabric holds its colour under coastal UV

One honest limit

An awning is a shade product, not a rain product — fine at a pitch in light drizzle, never in a storm or standing water. And the fixing substrate matters: a timber-clad cottage wall needs a different fixing plan to a poured-concrete rebuild, which is exactly what the in-home measure is for.

Where we fit folding-arm awnings

From Melkbosstrand's braai decks to the beachfront patios of Sunset Beach, wind-sensored awnings are one of our most requested exterior products along this coast.

What it costs

Priced on the shade it throws

The sum is width multiplied by projection, and the guide, installed, is R3,500 to R5,500 per square metre for a crank-handle awning and R5,500 to R7,500 per square metre motorised with a wind sensor. A full cassette that seals the fabric away sits at the top of its band, and on this coast we would specify one rather than leave fabric out in the salt.

A minimum charge applies to a short awning over one door, because the arms, the cassette and the fixing into the wall take the same work at any span. How exposed the patio is decides the specification more than the size does, and that is read at the free measure before any written price is put together.
